Olympic Coverage, Finland advances to Medal Round with 2-1 win over China

Former Fin coach Hannu Saintula knew going into the game tonight that his less experienced Chinese team would have to give 110% to beat the team he virtually assembled in Finland.

The Chinese got on the board first as Linuo Wang stole a pass at their own blue line and broke away for the shorthanded tally. Finland would answer in the second period as Karoliina Rantamäki was able to deflect a shot from behind the net off a Chinese defender and into the net to tie things up. Venla Hovi would get the game winner five minutes later as she stole the puck and dashed up ice for the five hole tally.

Finland applied much of the pressure in the third period but it was China who would have the best opportunities as the game wound down. Unfortunately for Hannu Saintula his team seemingly ran out of gas as the clock expired before his team found the back of the net again.

Finland will play Thursday against Team USA to determine seeding for the medal round. China will join Russia in the Classification round and attempt to battle for fifth place.
