Concordia College coach dismissed, replaced
Head Coach Corey "Ace" Gregg of Concordia College (Moorhead,MN) was alledgely fired following an incodent with a female staff member during a U-16 hockey camp in Mankato. Men's Assistant Coach Brett Bruininks will serve as the interim head women's hockey coach acording to the school. Athletic Director Larry Papenfuss stated to The Forum of Fargo (ND) that the college decided Monday (June 21) to fire Gregg after learning he had been dismissed from the camp.
“We all make mistakes and we all suffer consequences from poor choices, but you never like to see it happen among people that you’ve gotten to know and become close with, but we’ve got an obligation to look out for the best interest of our student-athletes and the reputation of our program,” Concordia athletic director Larry Papenfuss told the Forum. “It was on those grounds that the decision was made.”
Barry Ford is vice president of hockey operations for Minnesota Hockey. Ford says Gregg was coaching at a Minnesota Hockey select camp for 15-year-old girls and was dismissed for "inappropriate behavior" involving another adult, a female counselor at the camp.
Ford would not discuss specifics but says the incident took place June 15. Ford says no minors were affected.
Gregg recently completed his fourth season as head coach of the Cobbers recording a record of 12-11-2 his best yet since taling the helm of the sturggling program that recorded just six wins in the season prior to his arrival. In his four season Ace complied an overall record of 41-45-11. Gregg has two children lives in Fargo with his wife.
The Cobbers interim coach Bruininks played college hockey at the University of Notre Dame then moving to the pro ranks playing for three different organizations (Flyers,Blackhawks,Hurricanes. Bruininks earned a Master's of Education degree from the University of Minnesota in 2005 and continued on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 2009.
Bruininks does have women's coaching experience as he served as an assistant coach for the girls' hockey team at the Academy of Holy Angels from 2005 through 2009 before taking over as an assistant at Augsburg.

Edit: Concordia released a statement naming Brett Bruininks as the "interim" head coach instead of assistant Joe Vannett as newsdakota.com reported Friday.
