CIS Tournament: The Streak is over Alberta downs McGill 2-0

With an 86 game win streak and two consecutive CIS Championships at stake the No. 1 McGill Martlets certainly knew what to expect going into their gold medal game tonight against the three seed from the University of Alberta. However for Alberta a six time champion in the own right the outcome was anything other than what has become the norm. The Pandas got on the board at 6:09 of the first when Melody Howard took advantage of a second chance rebound and buried it past McGill netminder Taylor Salisbury for the only goal of the period. Each team sent two players to the box in the frame that saw Alberta take an 8-4 shot advantage. Alberta took three penalties in the second period before getting an advantage of their own. With Alberta forward Sarah Hilworth in the box for checking, McGill forward Vanessa Davidson ended the advantage 20 seconds in taking a penalty for holding. The Pandas would take advantage of the four on four as Tournament MVP Stephanie Ramsay riffled a shot on goal that deflected off a number of skaters and the post before Alana Cabana controlled and lifted it into the net. The Goal gave Alberta a 2-0 lead after two periods and a 14-7 shot advantage on the defending champions. The third period came and went with both teams trading scoring chances early and McGill trying to put one in late in the frame. The Pandas would survive a lose puck scare with under five minutes to play and go on to win their seventh CIS Championship.
