Monique Lamoureux scored the first in last goals today en route to a hat trick and a 9-1 win over Sweden today in the semifinals of the 2010 Olympics. UMD netminder Kim Martin stopped 37 of the 46 US shots while former UW goalie Jessie Vetter made 11 saves on 12 shots faced. Thirteen different US players had points in the game as seven different players had goals and five players had multiple assist outings.
Sweden struggled to control the puck at times leading to plenty of turnovers and few chances to score. UMD product Pernilla Winberg however found the back of the net on a Sweden Power Play midway through the second frame. The Swedes seemed to settle after scoring their lone goal of the game taking a penalty and then allowing a goal less than five minutes later. The Americans kept up the pressure in the third period and scored four more goals as Sweden seemingly ran out of gas from chasing a much quicker USA team around the rink.
The Swedes will have a chance to avenge the blowouts they have suffered in their past two outings when the play for the bronze medal on Thursday. Team USA will return to the Goal Medal game facing off with the winner of the Canada-Finland matchup on Thursday afternoon.
