College Hockey America Weekend Recap for 1/18

Conference Games
Robert Morris @ Wayne State, 0-1 & 2-3
Katrina Protopapas played savior for the Warriors on Friday as her third period goal proved to be enough to lead Wayne State to victory over the high pressure attack of Robert Morris. Kristen DiCiocco stopped 18 shots for the Colonials while Delayne Brian played very strong while picking up her third shutout of the season. In Saturdays rematch both teams failed to gain the upper hand in the first period thanks to solid goaltending by Daneca Butterfield and the aforementioned Delayne Brian. The Warriors got off to a rough start in the second period taking three
straight penalties leading to a Kathleen McDonald Power Play Goal putting RMU up 1-0. The colonials would get their only other goal of the game a minute and thirteen seconds later following another Wayne State trip to the box. The Warriors would get even midway through the period with their own power play goal followed up two minutes later with a full strength tally to tie the game. The Warriors appeared to dig themselves another hole five minutes into the third however with time winding down Veronique Laramee-Paquette took a Micheline Frappier pass in for what proved to be a short handed game wining goal. Delayne Bryan had another solid performance in net stopping 27 shots while Daneca Butterfield made 24 saves recording her 12th loss of the season. The Warriors return to the road next weekend for a series at ECACHL upstart Quinnipiac, while the Colonials return home to face Sacred Heart in a two game series.

Non-Conference Games
Quinnipiac @ Syracuse, 4-3ot & 2-1
When the Bobcats and Orange met at the start of last season the teams traded first wins on the season. The Bobcats were also the first team to fall to first year Syracuse. This season both teams are much improved and the results show just that. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe opened the scoring in the game putting SU up 1-0 at the 11:23 mark of the first. The Bobcats would answer at the 15:33 mark of the second as Kristen Eklund put the puck past Lucy Schoedel. The Bobcats would go on the power play to end the period as Gabrielle Beaudry went to the box with less than a minute to play for hooking, setting the stage for an exciting third period. Kallie Flor gave the Bulldogs the lead 28 seconds into the third with her sixth goal of the season. Syracuse would tie the game and take the lead before the midway point of the period as Lisa Mullan and Isabel Menard picked up goals. However the lead would be short lived as Kristen Eklund re-tied the game 15 seconds after the Menard goal as she was able to knock the puck into the back of the net. A defensive battle ensued in the remaining ten minutes of the 3rd period sending the game into overtime where Kristin Flor recorded her second goal of the game at the 2:24 mark giving the Bobcats a 4-3 victory. The Orange defeat on Friday seemingly carried momentum into the second game of the series as the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead sixteen seconds into the game. The two teams battled through 53 more minutes of play before the Bobcats extended their lead to 2-0 at the 14:43 mark of the third period. Janine Duffy picked up her second point of the game picking up the puck at center ice creating a two-on-one attack with linemate Kallie Flor. Duffy dished to Kallie Flor in the right faceoff circle and Kallie Flor ripped a shot into the upper right corner of the net for her eighth goal of the season. The Orange crashed the net in the last two minutes of play, firing several shots on Victoria Vigilanti. The Orange offense paid off as they were able to push one through with 1:08 remaining in the third period. The Loss for Syracuse dropped their record to 13-10-1 on the season. The Orange will stay home next weekend returning to CHA play against Mercyhurst.

Clarkson @ Mercyhurst, 3-6 & 5-5ot
Special Teams proved to be key in the Mercyhurst lakers taking three points from visiting Clarkson this weekend. The Lakers connected on six power plays outscoring the Golden Knights 11-8 total on the weekend. Clarkson took an early lead on a backhand shot from Dominique Thibault just 3:40 into the first Period. The Lakers answered back as Ashley Cockell evened the game at 1-1 when she deflected in a shot from sophomore Kelley Steadman at the point for a goal at the 10:29 mark. Less than seven minutes later, Bailey Bram gave the Lakers their first lead of the game with a blast over the head of Laura Dahm. However Clarkson tied the game with a Britney Selina goal on the power play at the 18:37 mark. Vicki Bendus gave the lakers a 3-2 lead on a back-door pass from Bailey Bram just 18 seconds into the 2nd period. Jesse Scanzano added to the laker lead with a 360 spin shot from the left circle at 6:49. Bailey Bram finished the three goal run with her second of the night at the 8:13 mark resulting in Clarkson calling timeout. The Golden Knights answered the challenge when Melissa Waldie scored with just six seconds remaining in the second to take a two-goal deficit into the third. Mercyhurst put the game out of reach as Jess Jones added a short-handed goal at the 18:47 mark. After a quick start to the game Friday for the Golden Knights it was the Lakers turn Saturday as Vicki Bendus put the Lakers up 1-0 at the 4:45 mark of the first. Nearly five minutes later Daris Tendler tied the game for the Knights sending the Lakers back to square one. The Lakers battled back in the second as Bailey Bram and Kylie Rossler tallied goals to open the first half of the frame. Transfer Dominique Thibault got Clarkson back on the right track 30 seconds later following a Melissa Lacroix body checking penalty. The Lakers never derailed added another goal as Pam Zgoda took the puck from behind her own net down ice and scored her first collegiate goal on an end-to-end play. The goal took the foot of the gas for Mercyhurst as the Knights scored three straight goals to close the second and start the third period and take a 5-4 lead in the game. With less than four minutes to play Vicki Bendus put the lakers on her back stopping a huge comeback win for Clarkson. Overtime came and went as the neither team was able to capitalize and the game ended in a 5-5 tie. If anything this series showed that the Lakers are for real this year and baring multiple upsets Mercyhurst should be in good position for the top seed in the NCAA Tournament.
