Six 08-09 Hockey Easterners invited to Canadian U22 camp

With every development of concern to her this offseason, it grows exponentially ironic that Providence College stopper Genevieve Lacasse went out of her way last winter to purge her Team Canada-themed mask in favor of one depicting the Providence skyline and mini-murals of the program’s past. For on Thursday, when the Canadian U-22 coaching staff unveiled its revised roster for next month’s evaluation camp, the Scarborough Save-ior was invited for a return trip to Calgary after making an impression at the initial camp there in early May.

Lacasse, one of five candidates still standing after the team’s goalie guild was trimmed from eight to five, has been invited as a two-sided alternate, meaning she could fill in on an as-needed basis for either the Red or White squad. She will be accompanied by a grand total of 26 fellow U.S. collegians, four of them fellow Hockey Easterners.

Blueliners Rebecca Hewett of Connecticut and Tara Watchorn of Boston University constitute two of the seven Red defensive players. Meantime, rising New Hampshire junior Courtney Birchard will join in on the White blue line, where she will back up, among others, yet another BU head-turner in Jenelle Kohanchuk, who as a frosh topped the Terriers’ 2008-09 scoring charts with a 15-16-31 transcript.

Also note that Dominique Thibault, now an ex-UConn forward bound for Clarkson in the coming autumn, will also skate for the Reds. Both Thibault and Birchard will be two of 14 veterans of the 2008 three-game U.S. series digging for more.
